Outsourcing Finance And Accounting Jobs

Will there still be opportunities in private/corporate accounting in the years to come?

I’m trying to decide between majoring in finance and accounting. I live in the Minneapolis/St.Paul area and I was thinking about going into private accounting (I do not have any interest in public) but I’m wondering if there will still be opportunities in the future. Will all the corporate accounting jobs get wiped out by the bad economy, or outsourcing? If the opportunities for corporate accounting don’t look good, I think I would go with a finance major because corporate accounting is really the only path in accounting that I’m interested in.

Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks!

Sure, there will always be opportunities for the right people with the right skills.

Here is my advice. You can take it or leave it.

1) Learn MS Access or some other database/report writer software. Accountants who know MS Excel are a dime a dozen. So are computer geeks who know MS Access. However, an accountant who knows Access is a rare find. I was recruited to my current position partly because of my knowledge of Access.

2) Learn something that no one else knows or likes and get good at it. I got thrown in to doing multi-state sales taxes about 14 years ago. As it turns out, I am really good at it and I like it. Also, there seem to be very few people who like doing it and are good at it. Again, I was recruited to my new company because of this skill.
